youth action for climate justice
presented by Youth Peace Initiative,
In conjunction with the
Sydney Peace Foundation
registration by wed 25th nov
wed 2nd dec 12.00pm - 1.30pm
year 9 - 12*
cost: free

With Guest Speakers from:

  • Australian Youth Climate Coalition
  • Youth Peace Initiative (YPI)
  • Student Social Justice Groups

In view of the upcoming Copenhagen Global Leaders Summit, the 2nd in the YPI Peace Connections video conference series will address the role of civil society (in particular youth) in building a movement for sustainable futures planning and policy-making. We will also be discussing the ways in which Climate Change is a peace/social justice issue (e.g., environmental refugees, environmental racism). A guest speaker from the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) will speak about what has been done and what is yet needed from Australian youth to take action on climate change. Participating schools will also be invited to speak about “green” practices in place in their own schools and communities and to share ideas for practical action.

Using “Connected Classroom” facilities and technology, the purpose of these meetings is for students around NSW to share ideas and strategies for fundraising and awareness-raising, as well as to learn practical ways that they can take action on issues that they care about (e.g. climate change, racism & bullying, poverty, war, human trafficking). A ‘peace education’ component is incorporated, with guest speakers relevant to topics chosen by the participants.

* This event is ideally suited to members of student social justice and/or environment groups. Please supply a brief statement about the interest of your group in registration for this video conference.

Penguins, polar bears and disappearing ice
Presented by
Polar Palooza and Questacon

Registration due mon 16th nov

9.30am -10.15am (year 4-6)*
11.00-11.45am (year 7-10)

For the past two years, 50,000 researchers from more than 60 nations have been exploring the Poles as part of the 4th International Polar Year, risking frostbite and falling into crevasses in order to gather nature’s secrets. They’ve studied polar bears and penguins, glaciers and the Southern Ocean surrounding the Antarctic. Using satellites and underwater robots, they have discovered amazing things: polar waters may be richer in biodiversity than the Caribbean, and new species can be found wherever you look!

The high-powered team of dynamic presenters will show high-definition videos of their adventures, and explain in memorable terms why what’s happening at the Poles is critically important to Australia. They’ll model the cold weather clothing that helps them survive, and explain where and how they live, what they eat and why they love their work.

There’ll be plenty of time for questions and answers and a chance to interact with some of Earth’s most extreme explorers.

POLAR-PALOOZA Australia is made possible by support from the Australian Antarctic Division, and the U.S. National Science Foundation.

on the kokoda trail -
with kurt fearnley
supporting movember
& men's health
registration due by mon 7th dec
thursday 10th dec 2009
1.00pm - 2.00pm
year 7 - 12 (stage 5 history)
cost: free (last of 3 sessions)

This November between the 7th and the 21st of November Kurt and a small group of close family and friends will walk the “Kokoda Track.”

Born without the lower section of his spine, Paralympic champion Kurt Fearnley says he's willing to risk his sporting career in a quest to crawl the Kokoda Trail. Kurt will have to leave his wheelchair behind in Port Morseby as he crawls the 96km’s from Kokoda uphill, across ridges and through creeks back to Ower’s Corner. The trek itself is expected to take some 12 days, up to 11 hours a day, for Kurt and his mates to achieve.

He will be tested by everything from disease-carrying mosquitoes to mud that infects by seeping into cuts and blisters. He will climb through a steamy jungle where temperatures will soar into the high 30s and humidity will exceed 90 per cent, reaching a peak of 2195m.

Why do this? As it is the month of November (now known as Movember) the group want to raise awareness around men’s depression and specific health issues. “It’s all about getting a group of close mates actually talking and asking for help when we need it, because at some time throughout this journey we are all going to.” The group will all be sporting some fine mo’s in support of Movember on their return home.

This video conference will be an audio link up with Kurt while he is on the Kokoda Trail and telling us about his journey so far and what trials, tribulations and exuberations he has encountered.

This is the final of the 3 sessions Kurt has shared with us. Come along and listen to the stories Kurt has to tell about his incredible adventure.

How to book

  1. Filll in the registration form and fax it to
    Connections on 6884 0243
  2. Connections will send you a confirmation email with the dial up number you will require to attend the sessions

There will be regular updates available at Kurt's blog site

For further enquiries about this virtual excursion, please contact Adam Currey (prior to 7th November - Adam will be tackling the Kokoda Track with Kurt!).
