women in physics - christine charles
powerhouse museum
wednesday 8th july 2009
11am - 12pm
Year 10 -12 Science students
cost: free
Christine Charles is Associate Professor at the Australian National University. She has a French Engineering degree in applied physics, a French Masters in materials science, a French PhD in plasma physics, a French Habilitation thesis in materials science and a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz from the ANU.
Everywhere we look, there is plasma. But we stand on solid earth and the solid state accounts for less than one percent of the total mass of the Universe. The rest is plasma, a hot ionised gas containing positive and negative charges. Plasmas have existed since the very first moments of the Universe. It is the stuff of stars. It fills the space between stars
It gives us the beautiful northern and southern aurorae. Our houses have plasma TV displays, plasma lights. In the 1970s plasmas created a revolution in the microelectronics industry and the performance of microchips (in computers, MP3 players, mobile phones…) has changed the way we live today.
This talk will first use the example of adding energy to water molecules to describe the four states of matter: solid (ice), liquid (water), gas (water vapour) and plasma. A few experiments with a tesla high voltage induction coil, a neon tube, a light bulb and a spoon will be carried out to demonstrate the main properties of a plasma. Various applications of plasmas will be described including plasma rockets for interplanetary space travel

live the dream - jason mccartney
premier's sporting challenge
Tuesday 28th july
11.00-12.00
years 7 -10 students
cost: free
The AFL appreciates its standing in the community and is proud to have a responsibility to the Australian youth of today. Many of society’s role models are current and former players of our great code. These role models have been developed on and off the field of Australian Football and the path they have taken pursuing, living and fulfilling their dreams makes their stories inspirational to many.
My story just happens to be one of those. From suffering 50% burns and a near fatal induced coma from the 2002 terrorist attacks that
rocked Bali, to a triumphant return and exit from
our wonderful Indigenous game.
I along with current AFL stars have developed this seminar designed to motivate the youth of today and provide them with the necessary tools in order to live their dreams. The seminar is designed to provide the attendees with the necessary skills to take control of their destiny by understanding decision-making, leadership, support networks and goal setting.
The seminar will take participants through these life skills in the form of three educational models titled
- Goal Setting & Time Management
- Leadership & Support Networks
- Choices & Consequences.
The models will require participants to relate their acquired learning to the activities in the workbook.
The activities are designed to support the information delivered in the seminar, to provide participants with clear and concise steps in preparing and mapping their future years, and to assist them to fulfil their personal destiny.

Please provide each participating student with a copy of this workbook prior to the video conference. |
